Some Common Questions

PAYMENT & INSURANCE

Most extended benefits now cover a portion or all of the costs of counselling up to a certain dollar amount.  However, it is important for you to check that my designation as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) is included within your insurance.  Please also note that MSP alone will not cover counselling sessions and that I do not do third party billing.  This means that I will invoice you directly and that you will need to submit the receipts to your insurance provider to be reimbursed.  I am currently accepting credit cards and e-transfers for payment.

I am happy to report that I am a registered counsellor with CVAP and can see clients who have coverage available through this program.

IN PERSON?

I'm happy to report that I have found office space and will be conducting in-person sessions on Fridays and Mondays at East Vancouver Counselling on Commercial Drive.  For more Information on the facilities, including COVID procedures, please visit East Vancouver Counselling's Webpage

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

If you have never been to counselling before, it can be a daunting prospect.  The best analogy I have found is its similarities with physiotherapy: you go in because something hurts, either because of years of wear and tear or maybe because of a specific instance of injury that happened recently.  The physiotherapist asks questions, prods a round a bit, gets an understanding of the pain, how your body has adapted to protect it, and does a few interventions to start helping your body heal as well as give you some bits of homework that might look like lifestyle changes or exercises to practice.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

The average out there is 5-6 sessions per one specific issue.  However, that can vary quite a bit from person-to-person depending on what you’d like to work on  Again, just like physiotherapy or massage therapy, some people use these services in discrete instances to deal with specific issues that come up while others use it as a form of maintenance that is woven into their regular self-care.

HOW OFTEN DO I GO?

On average I would say once every two weeks.  However, I see clients on a monthly or weekly basis quite often too.  Typically, I find it better to start off with the first few sessions in closer proximity to gain a bit of traction and then they typically tend to get farther apart as you see improvements and feel less of a need to come in.

WHO IS YOUR GOVERNING BODY?

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor through the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors and conduct myself in accordance with their ethics and standards: see https://bc-counsellors.org/code-of-ethical-conduct-and-standards-of-clinical-practice/

DO YOU OFFER SLIDING SCALE RATES?

I do offer sliding scale rates on a limited basis for those who have no insurance coverage.  Please inquire at our consultation.

HOW LONG DOES EACH THERAPY SESSION TAKE?

Therapy sessions are booked for one hour.  However, this is a "theraputic hour," meaning that it will be 50 minutes of talk therapy while the final 10 minutes is reserved for scheduling additional appointments, payment, and writing notes.
